She attended Wayne State College where she earned a teaching certificate before returning to Albion to teach at the district school adjacent to the family farm. Throughout her life, she was passionate about education, working in a preschool for several years along with teaching English to local Chinese residents.

Carolyn was united in marriage to Lee K. Johnson on June 9, 1957 in Albion, Nebraska. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Eric Johnson and Elisabeth Tracht of Valparaiso, Indiana, Ben and Rosanne Johnson of Delta, Colorado, and Diane Johnson of Vail, Colorado; her four granddaughters, Lilly of London, England, Emily of Silver Spring, Maryland, Anne of Stuttgart, Germany, Sara of Valparaiso, Indiana and three grandsons, Tre of Greeley, Colorado, Xaver of Vail, Colorado, and Colt of Delta, Colorado, her sister Marlene Miller of Grand Junction, Colorado, and her brother Rolan Bentjen of Albion, Nebraska. Carolyn was an avid reader. She enjoyed nothing more than being in her chair reading the latest novel on her iPad. She also enjoyed baking, especially making desserts such as apple pie, fudge brownies, kolaches, sugar twists, and cookies of all kinds. She avidly followed Delta High School sports where her son and daughter-in-law both work and she loved watching old movies. More than anything, Carolyn cherished being a grandma to her loving grandsons and granddaughters. Carolyn will be remembered for her warmth, kindness and the impact she made on those around her.

There will be no memorial service and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charily close to your heart in her honor.
