Hazel Denike

Hazel (Verkaart) Denike passed away on May 11. 2020 at Crossroads Assisted Living in Delta, Colorado. She was 103 years old.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Elizabeth Verkaart; her sister, Beatrice (Verkaart) Yurkash; her brother, Howard Verkaart and her husband, James Denike.
Hazel and Jimmy loved travel and saw most of the Continental U.S. either by car or flying their small plane.
Hazel was an avid gardener, loved going to the horse races and walking the Boardwalk at Atlantic City. Hazel remained a “Jersey Girl” to the end and even through she thought Colorado “too big” she enjoyed car trips to take in the beautiful mountain landscapes. She loved panning for gold around Ouray certain she would find that big nugget.
Hazel is survived by her niece, Nancy Sturgill and her husband Gary of Cedaredge; her niece, Isabel Parlin of Maine; and her nephew, Wesley Verkaart and his family of Massachusetts and Hawaii.
The family would like to thank the staff at Crossroads, the hospice nurses of HopeWest and her friend and neighbor, Jean Holgate for their care and compassion.
No services are planned at this time.
