Larry Gene Mackendrick

February 16, 1944 — February 10, 2021

Larry Gene MacKendrick was born March 16, 1944 in Paonia, Colorado, the oldest of three children to Lawrence and LaVonne MacKendrick. He passed away February 10, 2021 in Montrose, Colorado from pneumonia at the age of 76.
Larry grew up in Hotchkiss, Colorado, where he was active in 4-H, wrestling, track, and cross country. He graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1962 and participated in cross country at Colorado State College (today UNC) where he received his teaching degree. In 1965, Larry married Sharon Hawkins, and they settled down in Brush, Colorado at his first teaching job.
In 1970, Larry moved his growing family to Grants, New Mexico. He worked for over 35 years as a science, social studies, and special education teacher in Grants and neighboring areas. He was well known for his more outrageous science experiments that his students loved. He also enjoyed playing practical jokes, doing volunteer work, jogging, and working in his amazing garden.
Larry moved back to Colorado in his retirement. He continued to grow beautiful gardens, volunteered at the local food bank, spent time with his dog, and watched his grandkids play sports. Health issues forced him to eventually move to assisted living in Montrose.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence “Dollar” and Lavonne MacKendrick. He is survived by former wife, Sharon (Hawkins) MacKendrick of Milan, NM, children John MacKendrick (Moushumi Biswas) of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Janet (Al) Prewett of Milan, New Mexico, and Lawrence (Tonya) MacKendrick of Redlands Mesa, Colorado, and two granddaughters, Kinzie and Tori MacKendrick. He also survived by two sisters, Vicki (Wayne) Pfeiffer and Connie (Norman) Vincent, both of Montrose, Colorado.
A small family gathering will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
