Lestin Douglas "Doug" Nelson passed away Tuesday, August 17th, 2021, at Delta Health Hospital in Delta, Colorado. He was 80 years old. He fought a brave fight with a Glioblastoma Brain Tumor from November 2020 when he was first diagnosed with it.
The family will be doing a private memorial service at a later date in Paso Robles, California.
Doug was born August 11th, 1941 to Elizabeth Jean (Yocum) and Austin Leslie Nelson in Paso Robles, CA. He graduated from Dunsmuir High School and then attended a few years of college. During his college years he and his little brother delivered milk before school.
Doug served our country in the United States Army. He spent part of this time in Greenland and part stateside.
Doug made his career in the Railroad industry. He was a locomotive engineer. He ran mostly freight trains. He also ran Amtrak trains from Reno, Nevada to Salt Lake City, Utah. He was part of the Union Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers as a Local Chairman and the United Trainmen Union (UTU).
May 21st, 1988, Doug married Malinda "Linda" Audrey (Pollard) Nelson and in 2006 they made Delta, Colorado their home, leaving Portola, California.
Doug liked to fish and hunt, especially with his little brother. He enjoyed his trucks and spoiling his poodles, DeeDee and Sassy! He also volunteered at PACE helping older individuals during their later years. It was also called Senior Community Care.
Doug is survived by his wife Linda; his daughters: Patricia Dawn Mullins of Sacramento, CA and Megan McCray Nelson Cary of South Lake Tahoe, CA; step daughter Kellie Mullans of Glen Rock, WYO, little brother Lawrence Daniel Nelson of San Luis Obispo, CA; four grandchildren: Steven Mullins, Sacramento, CA Jacob Mullins, Sacramento, CA Zachary Beckstead, Grand Junction, CO and Elle Sosa, South Lake Tahoe, CA; one great-grandchild, Amelia Grace Mullins, Sacramento, CA; a niece, Lorri Nelson of Arroyo Grande, CA; and a nephew, Jamey Nelson of Santa Cruz, CA.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents and his aunt, Joy Furtado.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
