Lucinda "Lucy" Martinez

February 2, 1945 — November 6, 2024

Lucinda “Lucy” Rebecca Salazar Martinez passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at her home in Delta. Lucy was 79 years old.

Lucy was born on February 2, 1945, in Coyote, New Mexico to Lydia Ortega and Jose Manuel Salazar. For her first eleven years, Lucy lived and attended schools in the Coyote area until the family moved to Delta in 1956 where she continued her education. As an adult, she worked in the medical field as a CNA at nursing homes.

She met Jose Orlando Martinez in Delta, and they were married on August 26, 1967. Two children were born into this union, Stephen “Stevie” and Yolanda “Yoli” Martinez. Since Orlando was a minister, the family moved from Delta to Monte Vista and then to Medanales, New Mexico until Orlando’s death in 2010. Lucy made the move back to Delta in 2015 where she lived until her death.

Lucy enjoyed working at the nursing homes in both Olathe and Delta. She also worked at a casino in New Mexico until her move back to Delta. Before her health limited her, she enjoyed fishing, knitting, gambling, attending family functions, listening to Jimmy Swaggart and cooking and baking. She loved to cook and would try out different recipes that she would find on Facebook. Her grandchildren were her food tasters as well as those fortunate to stop by for a visit. When visiting, you were always greeted with a kind smile and a cup of coffee as well as a sample of her current recipe trial. She lived for her grandchildren. They were her rock, and she loved them with all her heart. Her four-legged companion, Boxer, was her buddy and protector and even till her death, he stayed by her side. She was also expecting her first great grandbaby this coming March.

Lucy is survived by her children, Steven “Stevie” (Amy) Martinez of Denver, and Yolanda “Yoli” Martinez (Paul) of Delta; three grandchildren, Juan Martinez of Florida, and Isaac and Jazmin Martinez of Delta; brother, Walter Salazar of Farmington, New Mexico; sisters, Rose Lovato of Rifle, Fito Vigil, Fay (Victor) Moralez, Theresa (Alfred) Garcia, and Mary (Nick) Moralez all of Delta; many nieces, nephews, and extended relatives; and her dog, Boxer.

Lucy is preceded in death by both her parents; her spouse, Orlando; sister, Mela; three brothers, Raymond, Benny, and Gene; niece, Norma (Alfred); nephews, Shannon, Joel, Frank, and Brandon; brothers-in-law, Norman, Frank, and Johnny; and sisters-in-law, Corine, Ruth, and Juanita.
