     Mary Ellen Coates passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at Valley Manor Care Center in Montrose, Colorado.  Mary was 76 years old.

     Cremation and a private service has taken place at Taylor Funeral Service in Delta.

     Mary was born on June 6, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri to Mary L. Lowe and Norman D. Shultz where he was in Dental school.  The family moved back to Colorado Springs where Mary spent her childhood, graduating from Poudre High School in 1965. Mary continued her education at the University of Colorado and School of Mines graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Geophysical Engineering.

     Mary met Brian Coates and they married on February 20, 1991 while living in New Mexico.  They celebrated 32 years together.

     Mary and Brian made their way to the Western Slope of Colorado and made Delta their home.  During her years in the Delta area, she worked several yeas at Russell Stover Candies, Clubbs Store and the old Taco Bell in Delta. When not working, she spent time gardening, taking care of her horses and breeding Nubian dairy goats. Mary was an avid reader.

      Mary is survived by her spouse Brian of Delta; two sisters: Joan Bowen and spouse, Dr. Richard Bowen of Wellington, Colorado and Elizabeth Grant and spouse, Michael Grant of Mustang, Oklahoma and several nieces and nephews.

     In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a charity of one’s choice.

      Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
