Sanford (Sam) Arthur McGuire of Delta, CO passed away February 22, 2022 in Delta. He was 85 years old. Sam was born on July 14, 1936 in Alpena, MI to Delmar Gordon McGuire and Bessie Marie (Harmon) McGuire. He spent his childhood in Mikado, MI and received his schooling in Oscoda, MI. On May 12, 1955 he married Florence Delores Everett in Hale, MI. He was a logger for many years working with family in their own operation. One of his biggest accomplishments was winning the 240 mile Michigan World's Championship canoe marathon in September of 1960 with Ed Wojahn which ran from Grayling, MI to Oscoda, MI. They overcame rain and lightning to set a new record of 16 hours 11 minutes and 55 seconds. Sam and Delores moved to Delta, CO in 1992 to retire. Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman so he was often deep in the peaceful solitude of the Colorado mountains with his cousin Ed Soper.
Sam is survived by his three sons David McGuire (Bettie) and Michael McGuire (Joette) both from Mikado, MI; Daniel McGuire (Elaine) of Windsor, CO ; daughter Deborah Huffington (Rick) of Delta, CO; brother Irvin McGuire (Rosemary) of Mikado, MI as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A private family service was held at the Huffington cabin on the Uncompaghre Plateau were Sam loved to hunt elk with his daughter, son-in-law and grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Delores and a grandson Tim McGuire.
